Women, lace up your shoes! A Beginner’s Guide to Trekking

Life is an adventure waiting to be explored, and trekking is the perfect way to embark on this journey. I come across many women who wish to go on a trek but don’t because they simply don’t know how to start.

If you’re a woman who’s been curious about trekking but confused and scared, I’m here to tell you that IF the mountains are calling, you must go! And trust me, the mountains do call, and only those who the call is for can hear it. That’s the reason, others fail to understand, why I choose the rigged mountains and chilly damp tents over luxury resorts and curated vacations!

Here are some tips that will help you get started and lead to the mountains

1. Embrace a New Mindset: Trekking, like life itself, begins with a mindset. It’s about embracing the unknown, seeking adventure, and discovering your inner strength. So, take a deep breath, let go of self-doubt, and embrace the the thought that has begun taking shape within you. Don’t ignore it. Everything happens twice, once in your mind and once in reality. When I first started trekking, I was hesitant and doubted my abilities. But with each step on the trail, I realized that the path to self-discovery is filled with challenges, and embracing them is where the magic happens.

2. Join a Local Trekking Group: There’s strength in numbers, and joining a trekking group can be a game-changer. Look for women’s trekking clubs or mixed groups that encourage female participation. Being part of a supportive community can boost your confidence and inspire you to explore more. During my first group trek, I was nervous but excited. The camaraderie and encouragement from fellow trekkers made me feel like I belonged. I have made some amazing friends for life.

3. Invest in Good Gear: Investing in proper gear is like equipping yourself for the challenges. Start with the essentials: comfortable trekking shoes, moisture-wicking clothing, a reliable backpack, and a sturdy water bottle. Quality gear ensures you’re prepared for whatever the trail brings. On my first trek, I had a hard time because my trek shoes were water-resistant, but not water-proof. Walking for hours with damp shoes gave me painful blisters. It was a reminder that investing in good gear is an investment in comfort and safety.

4. Choose Beginner-Friendly Treks: Every trekker begins as a beginner, and there are numerous treks designed for those taking their first steps into the wilderness. Opt for short duration beginner-friendly trails that offer stunning views without overwhelming difficulty. These treks provide a taste of adventure while building your skills. More than the trail or the peak, the first couple of treks will familiarize you with pitching your own tents, sleeping in a sleeping bag, getting comfortable with relieving yourself outdoors, making rapport with fellow-trekkers, and a host of other things that you are not used to.

5. Connect with Seasoned Trekkers: Mentorship is a powerful tool for growth. Connect with experienced trekkers, seek their advice, and learn from their journeys. They can provide insights, share tips, and inspire you to push your boundaries. I met a seasoned trekker who shared stories of his Himalayan adventures. Her passion was contagious, and she became my mentor, guiding me through my early treks.

6. Work on your Physical Fitness: Trekking demands physical fitness, and preparing your body for it is essential. Start with regular workouts that focus on cardiovascular endurance and strength training. This will make your trekking experience more enjoyable and less exhausting. On my first trek to Tiger’s Nest in Bhutan, I wasn’t as physically fit as I could have been. I struggled to catch my breath and felt exhausted. It hindered my ability to fully enjoy the trail and its magnificent destinations. Fitness is your ally in the mountains.

Trekking is a powerful metaphor for life. It teaches you resilience, self-reliance, and the joy of embracing new experiences. So, lace up those trekking shoes, venture into the great outdoors, and let the mountains become your mentors in this incredible journey of self-discovery.

If you hear the mountains calling for you, it’s time to answer!
