10 Profound Lessons from High-Altitude Trekking

Life is a journey, they say. Well, for me, that journey took a captivating detour when I discovered the world of high-altitude trekking in my late 30s. Picture this: a working mom of two teenagers, juggling a career, parenting, and everyday responsibilities, suddenly falling in love with the idea of conquering towering peaks, navigating rugged trails, and breathing the crisp mountain air. It may sound like an unconventional choice, but as I soon realized, trekking is not just about reaching summits; it’s about discovering profound life lessons and the most unique perspectives.

1. Human Connections are Real: In the corporate world, I’m used to meticulous planning and structured routines. But on the trail, I found myself facing the unpredictable. Trekking, like life, throws curveballs that you can’t always foresee. I’ve learned that adapting to unexpected situations with a smile on your face can be a beautiful way to grow.

On a trek in the Himalayas, we were suddenly caught in an unexpected rains that continued for over 2 days! We had nothing to do, everything had to be replanned, and we were stuck in our little tents. Instead of panicking, grumbling and worrying we shared stories about our lives back home, and found warmth in the community. It was a stark reminder that in adversity, human connections shine the brightest.

2. Slowing Down Isn’t Weakness: Mountains don’t bow to our schedules. Trekking taught me that nature dictates the pace, not the clock. Life, too, is a journey that can’t be rushed. It must be savored, step by step. During a high-altitude trek, I learned the hard way that rushing only leads to exhaustion and frustration. Embracing a slower pace allowed me to truly savor the breathtaking landscapes and the camaraderie of my fellow trekkers.

3. Resilience Will See You Through: Trekking isn’t always smooth sailing. Harsh weather, altitude sickness, and physical fatigue can be formidable foes. Yet, these experiences have forged my resilience and taught me that giving up is never an option. Battling altitude sickness in the Himalayas, I realized the true power of the human spirit. With determination, I continued my ascent despite the discomfort, proving to myself that resilience can conquer any obstacle.

4. Moments Over Milestones: In the mountains, every step counts. It’s not about reaching the summit as quickly as possible; it’s about savoring each moment of the journey. This mindfulness has translated beautifully into my daily life. I’ve learned to find joy in simple actions and small moments. While crossing a precarious suspension bridge, I felt the creaking of the wooden planks beneath my feet, heard the rushing of the river below, and marveled at the grandeur of nature surrounding me. It was a reminder that mindfulness isn’t just about meditation; it’s about being fully present in the here and now.

5. Letting Go is Not As Difficult As We Make it To Be: Trekking often requires leaving behind unnecessary baggage, both physical and emotional. In life, too, I’ve learned the importance of shedding what no longer serves me, focusing on what truly matters, and decluttering my life. During a trek in the Himalayas, I decided to donate some of my gear to a local village. It was a symbolic act of letting go of material possessions and realizing that sometimes, less is more.

6. Nature Stands Tallest: High-altitude trekking nurtures a profound connection with nature. It’s taught me the importance of preserving our planet and cherishing its beauty. As a mother, I want to instill in my children a deep respect for the environment. Trekking has reinforced my commitment to sustainable travelling, eating, clothing, and living.

7. Community and Camaraderie: Trekking often means journeying with a diverse group of individuals. Not only the co-trekkers, the support staff, guides, and rescue teams are part of one big community that are responsible for each other. By own own selves, we are nothing in the mountains. It takes a community to support, experience, and build memories.

8. The Zen of Packing Light: In high-altitude trekking, packing efficiently is crucial. This lesson translates into a minimalist approach to life. Material possessions matter less; experiences and memories matter more. Carrying a lightweight backpack in the mountains feels liberating. It was a metaphor for decluttering my life and realizing that true wealth lies in experiences, not possessions.

9. Gratitude for the Basics: In the mountains, you learn to appreciate the simple pleasures—a clean stream for drinking water, a hot meal after a long day, a cozy sleeping bag in the cold. This gratitude extends beyond the trail and into my daily life. Enjoying a hot cup of tea after a long day of trekking is a luxury I’d never take for granted. It’s a reminder that the basics we often overlook are, in fact, the foundation of our happiness.

10. The Power of Perspective: Finally, high-altitude trekking has given me a broader perspective on life. It’s shown me that challenges, no matter how daunting, can be conquered with the right mindset. As a mother, I hope to pass on this invaluable lesson to my children.

Trekking in the mountains has been my unexpected journey of self-discovery. As a working mom, it’s taught me to embrace the unknown, cherish life’s simple pleasures, and approach challenges with resilience. I understand that the journey is as important as the destination, and that the mountains have a unique way of teaching us profound life lessons. Most importantly, I hope my trekking tales inspire more women to embark on their own adventures, because sometimes, the path less traveled leads to the most beautiful discoveries, of nature and ourselves!
